Shirley grew up in Dallas, graduating from Sunset High School and Hockaday Junior College. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Texas, a Master of Education degree from the University of Houston, and certification in library science from Sam Houston State University. She studied Spanish in Saltillo and Mexico City, Mexico, and art at the Art Instituto in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Shirley had a lifelong career as an educator in the Spring Branch Independent School District. She taught first grade and junior high art and concluded her career as a librarian.

After leaving education, Shirley joined the Blue Bird Circle as a volunteer, enjoying many years working in various areas of the Circle. She was also a member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church, Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, Texas Retired Teachers Association, and several dance clubs.

Shirley enjoyed swimming, golf, and dancing. She also loved to travel, especially to her second home in Palm Desert, California. Throughout her life, she excelled in art and creating a beautiful home that welcomed her family and many friends. Known for her beautiful smile, Shirley was our "steel magnolia," who made "yes" a two-syllable word.

Shirley is predeceased by her parents; her sister, Alyce Lee Nelson; and her husbands R. M. "Chick" Taylor and Olin Lee Harn II. She is survived by her nephew, Jon Gaecke and wife Robbie of Sun City Center, Florida, and by her niece, Carol Holmgreen and husband George of Austin, Texas. The family appreciates the loving care provided Shirley by Buckner Villas and the companionship of her special friend over the past five years, Kate Forest of Visiting Angels.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay, Houston TX 77024. In lieu of flowers, Shirley asked that donations be made to The Blue Bird Circle, 615 West Alabama, Houston TX 77006-5003, or Memorial Assistance Ministries, 1625 Blalock Road, Houston, TX 77080.
